Introduction
Sleep apnea is a common yet serious sleep disorder that causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. Recognizing the signs and understanding the types of sleep apnea can help individuals seek timely diagnosis and treatment. Here’s an overview of sleep apnea types, symptoms, and how it’s diagnosed.

Types of Sleep Apnea
There are three main types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): This is the most common form, caused by a physical blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissues in the throat relax.
  • Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): CSA occurs when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles controlling breathing, often linked to medical conditions or brain-related issues.
  • Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Also known as mixed sleep apnea, this type is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
Symptoms of sleep apnea vary but commonly include loud snoring, gasping for air, or choking during sleep. Other signs are excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. People with sleep apnea may not realize they have these symptoms, so often, a partner or family member notices them.

Diagnosis Through Sleep Studies
Sleep apnea is typically diagnosed through a sleep study or polysomnography, where breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and brain activity are monitored overnight. Home sleep tests are also available, which track breathing and oxygen levels. Once diagnosed, doctors can recommend suitable treatment options based on the type and severity of sleep apnea.
